"George Enescu" Philharmonic
For over 150 years, the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra has been keeping up the rhythm of the musical life at the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest a place where modernity is welcomed by tradition. Equally spectacular and dynamic, the generous space there has favoured encounters with classical and contemporary music by life-long attendees there and younger music lovers alike.
Revered names such as those of Eduard Wachmann, George Enescu, George Georgescu, Constantin Silvestri, Mihai Brediceanu, Mircea Cristescu and Cristian Mandeal prove that the Philharmonic Orchestra has always had at its head master conductors who knew how to keep a high standard for the music in Romania.
Meet the People of the Symphony Orchestra
Virtually all the great composers and soloists of the glorious interwar years—Igor Stravinsky, Maurice Ravel, Arthur Rubinstein, Richard Strauss, Herbert von Karajan and Pablo Casals—made an appearance at the Athenaeum. The professional level has always been matched against the European level, where the Philharmonic has always felt at home and where it has always been considered a member of the musical elite. Today, as always, interpreters from all over the world are invited to perform along with the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra. Every week has its guests, and most of the concerts are sold out.
